Cavaliers approach Phil Jackson for open head coaching position, according to report

The Cavs have talked with legendary coach Phil Jackson about replacing the recently fired Byron Scott, reports ESPN.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have reached out to Phil Jackson about their open head coaching position, according to a report from ESPN's Brian Windhorst and Marc Stein.

The Cavs fired Byron Scott on Thursday and are attempting to gauge Jackson's interest in the job. Jackson retired from coaching in 2011 and said in January that he had no plans on ever coaching again, but ESPN reported last week that he was "itching" to return to the NBA next season. However, Jackson would prefer an executive position similar to the Heat's Pat Riley.

Jackson has interviewed in the past with Cavs owner Dan Gilbert, back in 2005 when Cleveland ultimately hired Mike Brown. There has been talk about a reunion between the Cavs and Brown, with the parties showing mutual interest.

ESPN sources say Jackson is currently mulling his options, as potential opportunities with the Brooklyn Nets or relocated Sacramento Kings may be more appealing. The Nets spoke with Jackson before firing Avery Johnson in the fall and the Seattle group trying to purchase the Kings is said to have interest in offering an executive position.
