David Kahn’s reign as general manager of the Minnesota Timberwolves is about to end, according to a report by Steve Aschburner of NBA.com. Minnesota will decline Kahn’s 2013-14 team option and hire former head coach Flip Saunders to become the next president of basketball operations.
Flip Saunders to replace David Kahn as Timberwolves’ GM, according to report
Is the David Kahn era coming to an end in Minnesota? Flip Saunders may return to the organization wielding new power, and that could leave Kahn without a place in the Timberwolves’ front office.

Saunders will reportedly join the team on a five-year contract, with option years, that could be worth up to $9 million. Saunders coached the Timberwolves for more than nine full seasons and led the franchise to eight straight playoff berths while amassing an impressive 411-326 record with the franchise. His last last stint as an NBA head coach ended when the Washington Wizards fired him after a 2-15 start to the 2011-12 season, and this season he has worked at ESPN as a studio analyst.
Minnesota owner Glen Taylor has been in talks with a group of investors interested in purchasing the franchise, and Saunders was involved in those talks. Now it appears he is primed to take a lead role in determining the construction of the roster.
