Timberwolves plan to release Brandon Roy soon, according to report

Brandon Roy’s bad knees prevented him from playing this past season, and now Minnesota will move on.

Jesse Johnson-US PRESSWIRE

The Minnesota Timberwolves are preparing to release Brandon Roy, according to Yahoo! Sports Adrian Wojnarowski. The Timberwolves will not owe Roy the remaining $5.3 million on the final year of the two-year contract that he signed last summer.

A condition of Roy’s contract was that if his chronic knee injuries made him unavailable Minnesota had the option of cutting him. Minnesota’s first move since the firing of David Kahn and hiring of Flip Saunders will be to move on from the Roy comeback experiment.

Roy started the first five games of Minnesota’s season but suffered from knee issues again and had to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery for the seventh time in his career in November. He suffered multiple setbacks and was unable to return to the court prior to the Timberwolves’ season ending.

The attempted comeback fell short for Roy after he was amnestied by the Portland Trail Blazers and retired for 2011-2012 season. In the five games he played for Minnesota he averaged 5.8 points per game on 31 percent shooting.
