As the Milwaukee Bucks continue the search for their next head coach, they can rule one Hall of Famer out. According to a report from David Aldridge of NBA.com, Jerry Sloan has decided he is not interested in coaching the Bucks next season.

Sloan, 71, won’t take a coaching job unless it presents a win-now opportunity.

“Jerry probably is a lot like Scott, in that the working conditions and where the team is (contender-wise) are important,” agent (Keith) Glass said. “For Jerry to go to a place that’s going to take years to build — and I’m not talking about Milwaukee, I’m talking about anywhere — that’s just not right for him. They have to be able to compete. Jerry is a competitor, and he wants to compete and teach.”
The decision to turn down the Bucks job is not a real surprise. As Glass mentioned, Sloan is likely looking to only take a win-now job, which is not the case with Milwaukee. Sloan turned 71 in March.
Sloan, who was inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame in 2009, abruptly resigned as Utah’s head coach in February 2011 after coaching the team since 1988. He has not coached since, although he was considered to be a serious candidate for the vacancy in Milwaukee by management until Thursday evening.
Over the course of his career, Sloan posted an impressive record of 1221-803 with the Bulls and Jazz, reaching the playoffs in all but four seasons. He has never won an NBA championship, although he did appear in back-to-back Finals in 1997 and 1998.
