Nets to consider Brian Shaw for head coaching position

After letting go of P.J. Carlesimo, the Nets are in need of a new coach, and team president Donnie Walsh says that Brian Shaw is a top candidate.

USA TODAY Sports

Brooklyn Nets president Donnie Walsh told the New York Daily News on Sunday that the team will be allowed to speak with Indiana Pacers assistant Brian Shaw about their head coaching vacancy after the Pacers' season is over.

Walsh said Shaw is a top candidate to replace P.J. Carlesimo, who was let go after the Nets lost to the Chicago Bulls in Game 7 on Saturday:

“I think Brian would be great as a head coach,” Walsh said Sunday. “Just as I thought Mark Jackson would be a tremendous coach, I feel the same way about Brian. They both know the game, you can tell they see it like head coaches. And they also know how to relate to players and get them to do what they need to be successful.”

Shaw has been an assistant under Frank Vogel with Indiana since 2011 after coming over from the Los Angeles Lakers. Shaw was a long-time member of Phil Jackson's coaching staff in Los Angeles, and the 47-year-old was a top candidate to replace Jackson when he retired. However, the job instead went to Mike Brown.

Jackson's name has also been brought up for the Nets' head coaching job. Other names that have been bandied about include Jerry Sloan and Jeff Van Gundy, although the Daily News reports that there's little chance the Nets even meet with Van Gundy.
