Jason Kidd will coach Nets in Orlando Summer League

The future Hall of Famer will “practice coaching” in Disneyworld.

New Brooklyn Nets head coach Jason Kidd will get his first experience with the clipboard at the Orlando Summer League in July, Kidd said on ESPN Radio Friday (via Newsday). Assistant coaches are usually the head honchos of the summer league squads, but that setup wouldn't work for Kidd for two reasons: He's never coached before in any forum anywhere, so he needs practice, and he doesn't have any assistant coaches yet.

"I think it's the best thing to get right into it," Kidd said. "I know that a lot of times head coaches don't coach summer league. But this gives me time to work on different parts of the game, learning to be a coach, also my philosophy and plays and the defensive stuff that I'll get to put in as my system... So, I get to see if it works. If it doesn't work, [then see] what changes I have to make and work from there."

Considering the makeup of the Nets' roster, it's unlikely more than a small handful of players on the summer league roster will be in uniform in the fall. MarShon Brooks might play as a third-year player, and Tyshawn Taylor will likely play. Maybe Mirza Teletovic and/or Tornike Shengelia will join in, but that's doubtful. They have just one pick in the 2013 NBA draft, at 22nd overall.

The Orlando Summer League runs begins on July 7 and ends five days later on the 12th.
