DeMarcus Cousins wants max contract, may push for trade otherwise, according to report

DeMarcus Cousins is angling for a maximum contract extension this summer. If he doesn’t get it, the talented big man may ask the Sacramento Kings for a trade.

USA TODAY Sports

DeMarcus Cousins reportedly wants a max contract extension from the Sacramento Kings this summer. If that extension isn't offered, it sounds as though the gifted big man will be asking for a trade -- telling the team with new ownership, new management and a new head coach that they'll need a new franchise cornerstone as well.

Cousins has been outspoken at times and occasionally finds himself getting in trouble for comments he makes on various subjects, but the Kings center would only offer a chuckle and “no comment” when the Sacramento Bee’s Jason Jones asked the player about his future with the Kings’ new regime.

The reason for the no comment is apparently by request of his agent, according to Jones.

The smile on his face and the rolling of his eyes showed how hard it is for Cousins to play the silent role. But he has to. His agent, Dan Fegan, has instructed Cousins not to speak on anything relating to the Kings team, management or ownership.

Cousins is eligible for a contract extension this summer, and Fegan wants a maximum deal for his client with the threat of a trade demand looming if a deal isn’t reached.

Cousins is a very talented player and has shown the potential to be one of the best at his position in the league, but his occasional outbursts of immaturity have sometimes held him back. A player with his size and offensive aptitude is likely worth a maximum contract, though, provided he can convince management that it’s worth dealing with his whole package.
