Despite his intriguing NBA pedigree, the son of former NBA shooting guard Glen Rice suffered some setbacks on his way to the association. Rice was suspended and eventually kicked off the team at Georgia Tech following a shooting incident outside an Atlanta nightclub in 2012. He then launched a comeback in the NBA D-League with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. After a slow start to the year, he helped to lead the team to the D-League Championship by posting 25.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per game in the playoffs.
His versatility as a wing player is considered a plus, and he has the athleticism to compete with NBA talent. His shooting stroke is still in need of a bit of refinement, but he displayed NBA range during his time in the D-League. Questions about his character turned some teams away heading up to the draft. Rice says his experience at Georgia Tech humbled him, and if that's true he could quickly become a solid contributor in the NBA.
If Rice can keep his head on straight, he could be a solid contributor for Philadelphia. The Sixers need help on offense, and Rice is a talented scorer on the wing.
