NBA Draft 2013: Utah Jazz selects Erick Green with No. 46 pick

The ACC Player of the Year dropped into the second round as expected, but Erick Green ended up being selected No. 46 overall by the Utah Jazz.

Erick Green, a 6'3 combo guard from Virginia Tech, has been selected by the Utah Jazz with the No. 46 in the 2013 NBA Draft. The 22-year-old prospect is a gifted scorer who led Division I basketball last season by averaging 25.0 points per game.

Green was expected to go somewhere in the mid-to-high second round, and that’s where he ended up. With Trey Burke also headed to Utah, they add two guards who were considered the best player in probably the two best conferences in college basketball last season.

Green made big improvements to his game during his senior season with the Hokies. He posted the best shooting numbers of his career while bumping up his scoring average from 15.6 points as a junior to 25 points last season, which led the NCAA. He is a dangerous scorer from the perimeter who can create his own opportunities off the dribble thanks to a quick first step and a speedy release on his shot.

At 6’3, Green is a bit of a tweener who will need to find the right role in the NBA. He’s more comfortable when the ball is in his hands, but he’s not a true distributor as a lead guard. He will need to add strength to become a solid defender, and he will likely need to be matched up on defense against opposing point guards at the next level. If Green can find room in the rotation to carve out a role as a bench scorer, he could make an immediate impact for his new team.
