NBA Draft 2013: New Orleans Pelicans select Pierre Jackson with No. 42 pick

Jackson can score the basketball at will. His future in the NBA will be determined by whether or not he can dig in on the defensive end.

The New Orleans Pelicans selected Baylor point guard Pierre Jackson with the 42nd overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft on Thursday night. He looks to become the first Bears guard to suit up in the league since David Wesley.

After spending two years playing JUCO ball at Southern Idaho, Jackson joined Baylor two years ago and immediately became one of the team's best players. A good athlete with solid point guard skills, his excellent ball-handling could carry him at the next level despite his lack of size (5'10). Required to take on a major scoring role during his senior season following the departure of numerous star players, including Perry Jones III and Quincy Miller, Jackson played well despite the team missing the NCAA Tournament.

The top scorer in the Big-12 at 19.8 points per game, he also dished out 7.1 assists a game as the focal point of the Baylor offense. Jackson will really need to improve on the defensive end if he hopes to play at the next level, and if he’s able to do that, he could be a nice value pick for New Orleans midway through the second round.
