The Sacramento Kings selected Detroit point guard Ray McCallum with the 36th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft on Thursday night. He's the first player drafted out of the school since Clippers guard Willie Green was taken by Seattle in 2003.

More on Ray McCallum Jr. A former McDonald’s All-American who played college ball at a mid-major program, McCallum is an interesting prospect to gauge. Hyped coming out of high school, he opted to stay close to home and play at Detroit, where his father is head coach. Flying somewhat under the radar at the smaller school, McCallum still proved his muster this season by playing well against the Titans’ solid non-conference schedule.
Lacking elite athleticism or size, McCallum mostly thrives on basketball I.Q. and ball-handling skills. Despite taking on an increasingly large role each year of his college career, his efficiency improved each season, peaking this year as he averaged 18.7 points per game on 49 percent shooting.
McCallum joins a crowded backcourt in Sacramento. Tyreke Evans, Marcus Thornton, Isaiah Thomas, Jimmer Fredette and first-round pick Ben McLemore are all good enough to play regularly. Look for at least one of these players to be traded or lost via free agency in the coming months.
