There's a 0 percent chance that the Dallas Mavericks trade small forward Shawn Marion during Thursday's NBA Draft, according to ESPN Dallas' Tim MacMahon. Marion would have to approve any deal before June 30 and nothing has been discussed with him.
NBA Draft rumors: Mavs won’t trade Shawn Marion, per report
There have been rumors that the Mavs would like to deal Shawn Marion on draft night, but the latest rumblings are that he’s staying put for now.
Marion is slated to make $9.32 million next year if he opts in to the last year of his contract as expected, and there have been some rumors that the Mavs would like to shed that salary. SheridanHoops reported last week that Dallas wanted to package Marion along with the No. 13 pick to the Cleveland Cavaliers for the No. 19 pick. Because the Cavs have cap space, they'd be able to fully absorb Marion's contract.
The incentive for the Mavs to dump Marion's salary is to ensure cap space for a possible maximum contract offer for Dwight Howard. However, Dallas likely won't know their chances with Howard until after July 1, so for now, they'll likely hang on to Marion and possibly move him later if there's a legit chance at Howard and more cap space needs to be freed up.
