The San Antonio Spurs selected Ohio State Buckeyes forward Deshaun Thomas with the 58th overall in this year's NBA Draft on Thursday night. One of the best scorers in college basketball last season, he could make an immediate impact on the offensive end of the floor during his rookie season.

More on DeShaun Thomas The Spurs have a knack for taking players late and turning draft nobodies into NBA somebodies. For a team that had several players not regarded as NBA caliber scorers playing like NBA caliber scorers deep into the NBA playoffs -- Danny Green was a second-rounder once upon a time -- a college scorer of Thomas’ caliber could do solid things for San Antonio.
A former McDonald’s All-American and arguably the best scorer in the nation’s best conference last season, Thomas still yields more questions than answers from NBA scouts. Despite having the ability to score from practically anywhere with his 6’7 frame, the Buckeye doesn’t have great athleticism or the ability to create for others. As a score-first wing that doesn’t shoot the lights out from three, display major hops or attack on defense, he’ll have to prove his bucket-making skills translate to the next level.
The Spurs’ first pick of the night was Livio Jean-Charles, who will likely stay overseas next season. As the team tries to figure out how to regroup after coming one win short of the NBA championship, their makeup is somewhat tough to gauge. But Thomas could find a spot on their roster, and if so, his ability to score could make him a role player.
