David West plans to stay with Pacers despite free agency

After the Pacers’ Game 7 loss, David West reiterated his intention to remain with Indiana.

The Indiana Pacers have one major free agent on a roster that took the defending champion Miami Heat to seven games in the Western Conference Finals: 32-year-old power forward David West. West joined the Pacers in 2011 after an All-Star career with the New Orleans Hornets. He signed a short-term, high-dollar deal with Indiana to help boost a young playoff team up the standings.

Now he’s again a free agent. This time, though, the Pacers are in title contention. That affects his decision, according to his comments after the Pacers’ Game 7 loss on Monday. Via Ben Golliver at SI.com:

“This is my group. These are my guys. I can’t see myself going anywhere else. We’re the second-best team in the Eastern Conference, one of the top four teams in the league, in my estimation.”

As Indiana has West’s Bird rights, the Pacers can go over the salary cap to retain him in free agency. Free agency officially begins on July 1.
