Pistons coaching search focusing on Nate McMillan, Maurice Cheeks

A report suggests Detroit will choose between the two former Blazers head coaches this week.

Ron Chenoy-US PRESSWIRE

The Pistons have likely narrowed their coaching search to two candidates: former Sonics and Blazers head coach Nate McMillan and former Blazers and Sixers head coach Maurice Cheeks, according to several reports. Cheeks recently flew into Detroit for a third interview with the team. McMillan has also met with the organization three times, according to Vincent Goodwill of the Detroit News. Goodwill suggests a decision could come this week after a final round of consideration.

Whoever is hired will face high expectations, especially after Pistons owner Tom Gores indicated he expected to make the playoffs this past season. The Pistons last appeared in the postseason in 2009. The team hasn't had a winning season since 2007-08 under Flip Saunders. Since then, Detroit has had three head coaches, none lasting more than two years. Lawrence Frank was fired at the end of the 2012-13 season after compiling a 54-94 record in Detroit.

Since 2009, Cheeks has served as an assistant coach under Scott Brooks with the Oklahoma City Thunder. McMillan was fired by the Blazers a year ago. He worked in the summer, however, as an assistant to Mike Krzyzewski for Team USA Basketball at the London Olympics.
