NBA free agency: Mavericks, Brandan Wright talking $4 million salary

The Mavericks look to be closing in on an affordable deal for efficient big man Brandan Wright.

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Mavericks and free agent forward Brandan Wright have been discussing a contract worth about $4 million per season, ESPN Dallas' Tim MacMahon reports. The deal will likely be for two years, which would allow him to hit free agency again while still in his prime.

Given the opportunity to test the open market this summer, MacMahon says “it’s a virtual certainty” that Wright returns to Dallas next season. Because the Mavericks hold his Early Bird rights, they can go over the salary cap to re-sign him as long as he receives no more than 104.5 percent of the league average salary.

After two years of being a minimum-salary player for Dallas, Wright looks sure to get a sizable raise this summer regardless of what happens. It is well-deserved, too, after the forward averaged 8.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in 64 games with the Mavs last season.

A favorite of statheads around the league, Wright’s PER has topped 21 over the past two seasons. That would make him one of the most efficient big men in the league with more playing time, but his 18 minutes per game in 2012-13 set a career-high. Per 36 minutes, he averaged 17 points, eight rebounds and more than two blocks last season.
