NBA Summer League 2013: Dion Waiters shines in ugly Cavaliers win

Dion Waiters had 23 points to lead the Cavaliers to Summer League victory over the Grizzlies in a game that featured a truckload of bricks from both teams.

Sunday's Las Vegas Summer League tilt between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Memphis Grizzlies was a tough watch, as both teams really struggled to put the ball in the basket. One of the few bright spots was the play of Cavs second-year guard Dion Waiters, who scored 23 points in a 69-58 victory.

Waiters did much of his damage in the fourth quarter, scoring Cleveland’s last 11 points of the game to help secure the win. Waiters finished the game shooting 7-of-17 from the field and just 1-of-4 from three-point land, but he did go 8-of-12 from the free throw line. He also had four rebounds, four assists and four turnovers.

Waiters, the No. 4 draft pick in 2012, is expected to be a big part of Cleveland’s offense this upcoming year, so the team has to be pleased with this performance after a 1-of-11 showing on Friday. The 12 trips to the foul line is especially encouraging, as the Cavs would like to see Waiters do more damage at the charity stripe next season. The youngster attempted just 3.5 free throws per game last year.

Waiters still has a lot to work on in terms of shooting efficiency, as evidenced by his 41.2 percent shooting last year and his uneven start to Summer League. However, getting to the line more often can sometimes mitigate those poor shooting nights.
