Clippers, Byron Mullens close to agreement on 2-year deal

The Clippers are nearing an agreement on a two-year deal with center Byron Mullens. The former first-round pick would help fill a need for some frontcourt depth in Los Angeles.

USA TODAY Sports

Free agent center Byron Mullens is close to an agreement on a two-year deal with the Los Angeles Clippers, according to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski.

Mullens averaged 10.6 points and 6.4 rebounds while shooting just 38.5 percent for the Charlotte Bobcats last season. Mullens also struggled on the defensive end, and the Bobcats didn't extend the first-round pick a qualifying offer, making him an unrestricted free agent.

While Mullens had his struggles in Charlotte, this could turn out to be a decent move for Los Angeles. Despite re-signing reserve big man Ryan Hollins earlier this offseason, the Clippers need some more frontcourt depth. Mullens may not be a good option as a starter, but he should be able to adequately fill a role off the bench if an agreement is reached.

Wojnarowski doesn’t report how much the contract would be worth, but the Clippers only have the minimum to offer Mullens. Los Angeles has already used their mid-level exception and don’t have the bi-annual exception at their disposal this offseason.
