NBA free agency rumors: Knicks interested in Elton Brand, Francisco Garcia

The Knicks have reportedly prepared an offer for 1999’s top overall draft pick and have interest in a few other free agents as well.

The New York Knicks are pursuing free agents Elton Brand and Francisco Garcia, according to multiple reports, as they continue to be one of the most active NBA teams since the end of the NBA Draft.

Brand played for the Dallas Mavericks last season after being a casualty of the Philadelphia 76ers' amnesty clause usage over the offseason. The former No. 1 overall pick averaged a career-low 7.2 points and six rebounds while starting 18 games for the Mavericks, but ESPN New York's Jared Zwerling reports the Knicks are prepared to make an offer to Brand and that their interest is mutual.

Garcia wouldn't quite bring the name recognition to New York that Brand does, but the 31-year-old swingman can still be productive in the right role -- and could come cheaper than some of the other free agents on the market, most notably the Knicks' own Chris Copeland. Garcia upped his production in the postseason this year, too, averaging 10.7 points and hitting 46 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc.

The New York Post's Marc Berman first reported the Knicks interest in Garcia, mentioning that New York also contacted Will Bynum, Aaron Brooks, Devin Harris, Sebastian Telfair and former Knick point guard Nate Robinson on the first day of free agency as well.

It’s unclear what type of offer New York is able to offer as they’re currently over the salary cap, but it sounds as though they’re narrowing their targets early in free agency.
