The Dallas Mavericks were hoping to keep Bernard James, but they were forced to waive the big man on Friday in order to have enough cap space to sign Monta Ellis, according to ESPN's Marc Stein.

The Mavs agreed with Ellis on a three-year deal worth just over $25 million last week, but they needed to clear a small amount of space to fit the guard under the cap. James turned out to be the casualty, and while he could still end up back in Dallas, Stein believes there’s a good chance that the 28-year-old will get scooped up on the waiver wire.
James played in 46 games for Dallas last season, averaging 2.8 points and 2.8 rebounds in 9.9 minutes per game. While those numbers are rather paltry, more minutes will likely be available in the Mavs’ frontcourt this season -- which is why the team would like James back.
