Akognon, a 27-year-old who ended last season with the Mavs on a 10-day contract, was the Mavericks’ leading scorer in the Las Vegas Summer League, averaging 17.5 points on 41.8 percent shooting. The 5’11 Fresno State alumnus shot 39 percent from three.
Akognon led the Chinese Basketball Association in scoring each of the past two seasons with the Liaoning Dinosaurs, but the Mavericks needed the $600,000 in cap space created by waiving him and second-year big man Bernard James in order to complete the Monta Ellis signing, writes ESPN Dallas' Tim McMahon. McMahon said the Mavs hope to bring Akognon back for training camp if he's not snatched up by another team.
