The Mavs met with the Greek-American guard in June to discuss possibly coming over to the NBA, but they have since been looking to trade him after reaching a three-year agreement with Israeli point guard Gal Mekel. The 25-year-old Mekel played well for Dallas at the Las Vegas Summer League.
Calathes was drafted in 2009 and has been playing overseas the past four years. The Florida product is hoping to finally make the jump to the NBA next season after leading Lokomotiv Kuban of the Russian Professional Basketball League (PBL) to the EuroCup title. Calathes averaged 12.9 points, 6.7 assists and 5.9 rebounds in the tournament, earning himself MVP honors.
Calathes is still under contract with Lokomotiv in 2013-14, but he has an NBA out that would allow him to head over to the United States.
