NBA free agency: Andrew Goudelock agrees to one-year deal with Russian team

Despite lighting up scoreboards in both the NBA D-League and NBA Summer League this year, NBA teams weren’t knocking down Goudelock’s door.

USA TODAY Sports

Andrew Goudelock will be heading to Russia next season after the free agent guard was unable to secure a guaranteed NBA contract. The former Los Angeles Lakers reserve agreed to a contract with BC UNICS Kazan on Friday, according to Mark Medina of InsideSoCal.com.

Despite winning 2013 D-League MVP honors and continuing that success in the Summer League with the Chicago Bulls, Goudelock couldn't find a job in the NBA this summer. He'll be paid handsomely to head overseas, though, as Medina says the deal with BC UNICS is worth "considerably more" than his NBA veteran's minimum salary of about $1 million.

A talented scorer despite being a bit undersized at 6’3, Goudelock likely hopes to light up defenses in Russia before earning an NBA opportunity next summer. He played 40 games for the Lakers during the 2011-12 season, but spent practically all of last season in the D-League before a late call-up to Los Angeles.

Goudelock proved to be a great player at the D-League level, earning the MVP award by averaging 21.1 points, 5.2 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game. He was efficient for someone scoring at such a high volume, too, hitting 37 percent of his three-pointers and 48 percent of his shots from the field.

BC UNICS plays in the top Russian professional league, the PBL, and won the 2011 Eurocup. Goudelock will artner up with former Coppin State guard Tywain McKee in the team’s backcourt.
