NBA free agency: Gary Neal to sign with Bucks, according to report

The Bucks add some backcourt depth by signing the former Spurs reserve.

Soobum Im-US PRESSWIRE

The Milwaukee Bucks and free agent guard Gary Neal agreed to a two-year deal worth $3.25 million per year on Saturday, according to Charles Gardner of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The deal shores up the shooting guard position for the club with O.J. Mayo and Neal replacing Monta Ellis and J.J. Redick on the roster.

Neal became a restricted free agent this summer after playing a key reserve role for the San Antonio Spurs, but failed to garner much interest on the open market. San Antonio looked to trim the fat from its payroll and Nealwas seen as superfluous so the team eventually pulled its qualifying offer, making Neal an unrestricted free agent.

With the Spurs no longer holding the right to match any offer, interest for Neal’s services went up significantly in recent weeks. A number of landing places seemed possible for the sharp-shooting guard, but Milwaukee appeared to be the most obvious fit.

In 68 games with San Antonio last season, Neal averaged 9.5 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. He’s a 40 percent shooter from beyond the arc during his NBA career.
