Dwight Howard rumors: Warriors ‘made real impression,’ may be in chase

The Howard sweepstakes could have a very legitimate player in the Golden State Warriors.

The Golden State Warriors may be considered underdogs to acquire Dwight Howard, but ESPN's Marc Stein says the team "made [a] real impression" during meetings with the free agent this week. A sign-and-trade would be necessary for any deal involving the two sides to go through.

While that key complication ultimately makes Howard-to-Golden State highly unlikely, Stein says the team emerged as a factor after that meeting. Should the Warriors be willing to give up the necessary assets to appease the Los Angeles Lakers while fitting Howard's max contract onto their payroll, it appears he's seriously interested in the option.

Given the sizable salary Howard will command, the Warriors would need to be able to send substantial salaries to L.A. to complete a deal. Considering the Lakers have appeared disinterested in a sign-and-trade, Golden State and Howard would likely need to get creative in order to join forces.
