NBA offseason recap: Clippers keep Chris Paul, Warriors add Andre Iguodala to compete in Pacific Division

The Golden State Warriors managed to improve on a team that made noise in the postseason by adding Andre Iguodala, while the Los Angeles Lakers were forced to move on due to the decision of a fickle big man, but perhaps the winners of the offseason in the Pacific Division were the Clippers, who managed to hold onto Chris Paul.

Keeping Paul wasn’t easy -- the Clips felt the need to bring in Doc Rivers as their coach to convince the talented point guard to stay -- but it was worth it to keep arguably the best point guard in the NBA. Meanwhile, their crosstown rivals, the Lakers, did their best to keep Dwight Howard, but he decided he’d rather move on to Houston to join the Rockets.

With a scant few palatable free agents left, here’s a look at what the five teams in the Pacific Division did this summer.

The Golden State Warriors lost two key contributors from their Western Conference semifinals run in Jarrett Jack and Carl Landry, and replaced them with Toney Douglas, Jermaine O’Neal and Marreese Speights. The highlight of their off-season was the addition of Iguodala, which was accomplished by dumping $24 million in combined salary from Richard Jefferson, Andris Biedrins and Brandon Rush to the Utah Jazz with future draft picks as compensation. Their core is still largely intact with Barnes, Thompson, Lee, Curry and Andrew Bogut all set to return.

The Los Angeles Clippers will be without BIllups, Turiaf, Bledsoe, Hill and Butler, but they’ve added a host of players to replace them. Bullock, Dudley, Redick, Collison and Mullens come from free agency, with Hollins, Barnes and, of course, Paul re-signing. The Clippers will also be under the guidance of acquired head coach Doc Rivers.

The biggest free agency signing of the summer came at the cost of the Lakers when Howard chose the Houston Rockets. Since then, the Lakers have added Kaman, re-signed Sacre and brought Farmar back to Los Angeles from an overseas stint. They also signed youth for their perimeter rotation in Young and Wesley Johnson while uncertainty surrounds Bryant’s return to the floor after tearing his Achilles. Aside from Howard, the Lakers will also be without Clark, Morris, D-league Most Valuable Player Andrew Goudelock, Duhon and amnesty victim Metta World Peace.

The rebuilding Suns used the fifth-overall draft pick in the 2013 NBA Draft to select Len out of Maryland, and pick No. 29 on Kentucky’s Goodwin. O’Neal and Johnson will not return, both signing with Pacific Division rivals. Dudley andScola were traded for Bledsoe, Butler, Lee, Plumlee and Green, along with a protected 2014 first-round draft pick from the Indiana Pacers. A total of eight new faces are set to join the Suns for the 2013-2014 NBA season.

Former lottery pick Tyreke Evans’ time with the Sacramento Kings has come to an end as the team ushers in a new lottery selection in McLemore. McCallum will join McLemore as the Kings’ two incoming rookies. Vasquez was acquired when Evans was sent to the New Orleans Pelicans in a sign-and-trade, and Mbah a Moute cost the Kings two future second-round draft picks. Douglas signed with the Golden State Warriors, while Landry will return to the Kings.
