The Charlotte Bobcats will use the amnesty clause on Tyrus Thomas to make room for the impending signing of Al Jefferson, according to Turner Sports' David Aldridge. Thomas was owed $18 million over the next two seasons.

The Bobcats are getting out from under the bad contract of Tyrus Thomas in order to make room for Al Jefferson within their salary cap.

Early indications are that the Bobcats might’ve overpaid for Jefferson’s three-year deal worth nearly $14 million per season, but at least the contract of Thomas won’t continue to hamper their salary cap. Charlotte will have to pay Thomas the remainder of the contract, though those costs can be offset a bit by Thomas’s next NBA contract.
Thomas signed a five-year, $40 million contract the summer after the Bobcats acquired the former fourth overall pick in exchange for Acie Law, Ronald Murray and a future first-round pick. That deal hasn't turned out to be a wise investment, however, as he averaged just 4.8 points and 2.3 rebounds for Charlotte last season while picking up numerous Did Not Play -- Coach's Decision.
Jefferson’s deal won’t turn out that bad considering it’s for just three years, but he’ll have to perform quite well to make sure he lives up to his end of the contract.
