NBA free agency: Clippers and Matt Barnes reach 3-year agreement

Matt Barnes will return to the Clippers after putting up career numbers last season.

Joe Robbins

Free agent forward Matt Barnes has agreed to a three-year deal in the $11-12 million range with the Los Angeles Clippers, reports Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports. The final year of the contract is non-guaranteed, per Dan Woike of the Orange County Register.

Barnes signed a one-year, $854,389 contract with the Clippers last summer and scored a career-high 10.3 points per game in his first season with the franchise.

Barnes gives the Clippers a perimeter defender and depth behind Jared Dudley after trading Caron Butler to the Phoenix Suns.

His deal will require the use of the Clippers' mid-level exception, which likely takes the Clippers out of the running for Carl Landry, a player who Chris Paul had requested the front office meet with. Landry opted out of a $4 million contract with the Golden State Warriors, and without the mid-level exception, the Clippers are unlikely to have the financial flexibility to add Paul's former teammate.
