NBA free agency: Omri Casspi reaches 2-year deal with Rockets, according to report

Omri Casspi joins a Rockets team looking to fill out the roster for next season’s run.

Soobum Im-US PRESSWIRE

Adding to their stable of role players, the Houston Rockets agreed to a two-year contract with free agent Omri Casspi on Saturday, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports. Casspi will presumably help fill the role played by the departed Carlos Delfino.

The deal includes a team option for the 2014-15 season and will be worth the league minimum, roughly $2 million.

With Josh Smith no longer on the table after reportedly signing with Detroit, the Rockets may attempt to make more small moves like this to surround their new core. With an All-NBA center in Dwight Howard added to the mix, filling the cracks between he and James Harden with effective role players could make for a contender next season.

Casspi, though he’s struggled in recent years, gives the Rockets someone who could potentially help space the floor around Howard without giving up size. The quality shot that he showed during his first two years in Sacramento eluded him during recent seasons in Cleveland, but at 6’9 he’ll likely get numerous open looks in the new Houston offense.

Considering he’s only 25 years old and won’t get paid much, it’s an intriguing signing for Houston.
