NBA free agency: Andrew Bynum scheduled to meet with Hawks, Mavs this week

The Hawks and Mavericks look to make their respective pitches to Andrew Bynum this week.

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

The Atlanta Hawks and Dallas Mavericks have scheduled "face-to-face recruiting meetings" this week with free agent big man Andrew Bynum, ESPN.com's Marc Stein reports. These could be the prime suitors for arguably the top remaining free agent on the market.

In Bynum, teams really have no idea what they might be getting. Injuries have piled up for the big man to the extent that some analysts wonder if he’ll ever be consistently healthy again, yet everyone still admits his talent makes him a potential All-Star if his knee ever holds up.

With all that said, some team will surely take a risk on the 25-year-old being able to stay on the court. Just a season ago, he averaged 18.7 points, 11.8 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game as the best center in the league, a level of performance that would have led to a max contract this summer had his knees not betrayed him.

A spot in Dallas seems more readily available than one in Atlanta, where the Hawks currently have Al Horford and the recently signed Paul Millsap to help fill out the frontcourt. A trade could always happen, and Bynum may not be capable of giving 35 minutes a night anymore anyway, but there's a clear starting spot in Dallas if he chooses that route.
