NBA free agency: Lakers and Chris Kaman reach one-year agreement

The Lakers have signed an All-Star big man to replace Dwight Howard, but, well...

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Lakers have apparently found next season's replacement for Dwight Howard by agreeing to a one-year contract with free agent Chris Kaman, according to ESPN's Marc Stein. The deal will be for the taxpayer's mid-level exception, $3.183 million.

He was an All-Star with the Los Angeles Clippers in 2010, but Kaman's production no longer comes close to qualifying as that sort of player. A part-time starter with the Dallas Mavericks and New Orleans Hornets during the past two seasons, injuries often limited his playing time. On the bright side, he has maintained decent efficiency numbers.

For a Lakers team scrambling to build its roster for next season after missing out on Howard, Kaman should be a solid, albeit underwhelming stopgap. Last season, he averaged 10.5 points and 5.6 rebounds in 66 games with the Mavs.
