NBA free agency: Wayne Ellington, Mavericks agree to 2-year deal

Ellington, a former first round pick, heads to Dallas after spending the last four years with three different teams.

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Wayne Ellington has reached a two-year deal worth $5+ million with the Dallas Mavericks, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. It was reported that the contract has some financial incentives included, although the details were not immediately disclosed.

Ellington, 25, has spent the past four years with three different teams. After being selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the 28th pick of the 2009 NBA Draft, the 6'4 combo guard averaged just over six points a game during his first three seasons in the league. Ellington got off to another slow start with the Grizzlies last year, but a mid-season trade to Cleveland led to him averaging 10.4 points, three rebounds and 1.6 assists during the final 38 games of the year. He made 17 starts.

The former North Carolina star has never been an efficient scorer, though he did shoot 40 percent from behind the three-point arc in 2012-13, a career-best. Ellington is regarded as a slightly below-average defender.

The Mavericks needed to add to their bench this offseason and Ellington should serve as a solid sixth or seventh man. If injuries arise, there is a chance he could find an opportunity to start once again.
