NBA free agency: Pistons with ‘exploratory interest’ in Jason Collins, per report

The Pistons have had discussions with free-agent center Jason Collins, who became the first openly gay athlete in North America’s four traditional major sports leagues in April.

USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Pistons have shown "exploratory interest" in free-agent center Jason Collins, according to ESPN's Marc Stein and Ramona Shelburne. No offer has been made, but there have been discussions between the two parties.

Collins, 34, played sparingly for the Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards last season, appearing in 38 games and averaging 1.1 points and 1.6 rebounds in 10.1 minutes per game.

Collins made headlines after the regular season when he came out as the first active openly gay athlete in North America’s four traditional major sports leagues. The big man has received little interest in free agency thus far, but NBA executives believe that has nothing to do with his announcement and everything to do with his recent on-court production.

Collins could be a nice fit in Detroit, where he could help mentor young big men Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond. The Pistons are currently one guaranteed contract shy of the NBA's limit of 15.
