NBA free agency: Pistons unlikely to sign Jason Collins, according to report

Jason Collins has had discussions with the Pistons, but it’s looking unlikely that the veteran center will be heading to Detroit.

USA TODAY Sports

While the Detroit Pistons have reportedly had discussions with Jason Collins, the team isn't seriously considering signing the veteran center, according to Vincent Ellis of The Detroit News.

ESPN first reported Saturday that the Pistons had "exploratory interest" in Collins, and that the two sides had engaged in preliminary talks. Detroit is looking for another big man to back up Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond, and Collins could potentially act as a mentor for the youngsters.

However, Ellis reports that the Pistons are looking for a younger option with more miles left in the tank. Collins is 34 years old and hasn't averaged more than 11 minutes per game since the 2010-11 season. Last year between the Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards, Collins appeared in only 38 contests and played 10.1 minutes per game. He averaged just 1.1 points and 1.6 rebounds.

Collins made news in April by becoming the first openly gay athlete in North America’s four traditional major sports leagues. He has received little interest in free agency, but the lack of suitors is likely entirely due to his lack of on-court production and not his sexual orientation.
