NBA free agency: Al Harrington expected to sign with Wizards, per reports

After being waived by the Magic, Al Harrington is likely to sign with the Wizards in the very near future. Harrington says he’s just about back to full health after dealing with knee problems last season.

USA TODAY Sports

Free agent forward Al Harrington is expected to soon sign with the Washington Wizards, according to ESPN's Marc Stein. Alex Kennedy of HOOPSWORLD confirmed a deal was near and that Harrington just needed to pass a physical.

The Orlando Magic waived Harrington in early August after he played in only 10 games last year due to problems stemming from surgery on his right knee in April 2012. The Magic owed him a little more than $7 million in guaranteed money over the next two seasons, and since a new buyout agreement wasn't reached, he will receive nearly all of those guaranteed dollars from Orlando.

Harrington has been working out diligently this summer and says he has lost 27 pounds. The veteran forward also proclaimed via Twitter and Instagram after being waived by the Magic that he was “almost 110 percent back healthy.”

The Wizards have been searching for some scoring punch off the bench, and a healthy Harrington can certainly provide it. The 33-year-old was one of the top subs in the league in 2011-12, averaging 14.2 points in 27.5 minutes per game for the Denver Nuggets.

If Harrington is signed, the Wizards will have reached the NBA’s roster limit of 15 guaranteed contracts. After numerous seasons at the bottom of the Eastern Conference, Washington should be fighting for one of the last playoff spots this upcoming year.

The Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Clippers, among other teams, also reportedly had interest in Harrington.
