Hawks waive DeShawn Stevenson, make room for DeMarre Carroll

Atlanta has cleared the way to sign the former first-round draft pick after waiving DeShawn Stevenson.

The Atlanta Hawks have waived DeShawn Stevenson, reports Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Stevenson signed a three-year, $6 million fully non-guaranteed contract with the Hawks in 2012, which means Atlanta will not owe him any money. The Hawks are now expected to sign DeMarre Carroll with the open roster spot.

Carroll agreed to a two-year, $5 million contract with the Hawks on July 5, but the team has not been able to make the signing official. With the roster in place, waiving Stevenson served as the last step, and the team is expected to officially announce the addition of Carroll as early as Saturday, according to Vivlamore.

The Memphis Grizzlies drafted Carroll with the 27th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. He has played for the Houston Rockets, Denver Nuggets and Utah Jazz since leaving the Grizzlies. Carroll averaged 6.0 points on 46 percent shooting in 16.8 minutes per game last season with the Jazz.
