Ty Lawson charges reportedly stemmed from dispute with girlfriend over phone call

An argument with his girlfriend over a cell phone conversation has Ty Lawson in legal trouble.

Chris Humphreys-USA TODAY Sports

Denver Nuggets guard Ty Lawson was charged with criminal mischief and harassment after a dispute with his pregnant girlfriend, Ashley Nicole Pettiford, on Saturday, according to court affidavits. The argument broke out after Pettiford overheard a cell phone conversation he was having with "another woman," reports Sadie Gurman of The Denver Post.

Pettiford said she went to the dresser where Lawson’s phone was and threw it toward the hallway wall. Then she grabbed her own phone and called her mother. But the conversation was cut short because Lawson took her phone and threw it against another wall, the affidavit says. When he saw it wasn’t broken, he ran it under a bathroom faucet.

Pettiford’s mother called the police after the conversation was disrupted. Police found scattered clothing, a broken lamp shade, other scattered belongings and an empty suitcase that Pettiford was preparing to pack to leave the house. Pettiford claims that Lawson “grabbed both of her arms” and pushed her back toward the bed, preventing her from packing.

In addition to Lawson’s charges, Pettiford faces charges of criminal mischief and domestic violence. Both parties were placed under arrest Saturday and have since been released on bond.
