Bosnian center Ognjen Kuzmic signs with Warriors, according to report

The 2012 second-round pick has opted out of his contract in Spain in order to join the Warriors.

USA TODAY Sports

Golden State Warriors 2012 second-round draft pick Ognjen Kuzmic will sign with the Warriors after opting out of his contract with Spanish club Unicaja Malaga, according to the Spanish team's website.

The Warriors selected Kuzmic with the 52nd pick in the 2012 draft, but expected that he’d remain overseas until he was ready to contribute. The 23-year-old Bosnian big man signed a contract with Unicaja Malaga in 2011 and, after a year with their farm team, he was loaned to FIATC Joventut in Spain.

Kuzmic averaged 6.9 points and 5.5 rebounds in 18.2 minutes per game for Joventut in the Spanish ACB League last season.

The 7’1 center is reportedly rather raw on the offensive end, but he does show promise defensively and on the glass. Kuzmic needs to add some weight to his slight 230-pound frame, but he apparently boasts solid athleticism for a player his size while possessing good shot-blocking instincts.

The Warriors are already pretty deep in the frontcourt so it’s hard to imagine a project like Kuzmic getting much meaningful playing time unless there are a litany of injuries. Still, if the youngster puts in the work needed to continue his development, perhaps he can make an impact in the NBA in the near future.
