Chris Paul named NBPA president

The NBPA didn’t get LeBron, but its next president is a notable one.

USA TODAY Sports

The NBA Players Association elected Los Angeles Clippers guard Chris Paul as its new president Wednesday, making an official announcement on Twitter. He replaces Derek Fisher after a tumultuous period for the league's player union.

After watching LeBron James flirt with the possibility of running for NBPA president only to decline, this is an intriguing recovery for the union with another premier player taking the role. Paul, a brilliant point guard and notable off-court personality, may be the second-most influential player in the sport beyond James.

Whether this actually helps change the fortunes of an NBPA in dire straits remains to be seen, but Paul is the kind of player others respect. Assuming he takes his serious on-court personality and applies it to these business matters, it could be a positive development.

Also Wednesday, the NBPA announced Roger Mason Jr. has been named first vice president, while the new executive committee vice presidents are Steve Blake and Anthony Tolliver. Currently unsigned, Mason Jr. played for the New Orleans Hornets last season. Blake plays for the Lakers and Tolliver for the Bobcats.
