FIBA Asia 2013 results: Iran, China roll in Group F action

The second round of the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship is underway, with six total games on the day being played between Groups E and F. Iran continued its domination of the tournament with another huge victory, while Chinese Taipei and Qatar also remain undefeated.

Here’s a look at Monday’s action:

The game was tied at 23-23 after one quarter, but Qatar slowly built a lead over the rest of the game. Qatar led by four at the break and by nine heading into the fourth quarter, and it held Jordan to just nine points in the final frame.

Mohammad Hadrab led Jordan with 16 points. Jordan shot just 35.5 percent overall and 31.8 percent from beyond the arc.

Chinese Taipei 94, Hong Kong 55: Shih-chieh Chen had 13 points to lead a balanced scoring effort for Chinese Taipei in a blowout victory over Hong Kong. Five players scored in double figures for Chinese Taipei, and the team shot 57.6 percent overall and 51.9 percent from long range.

The contest was close early on until Chinese Taipei blew things open in the middle two quarters. Chinese Taipei outscored Hong Kong, 55-24, in the second and third quarters combined, and it cruised in the fourth to victory.

Shing Yee Fong had 13 points, and he was the only player on Hong Kong to score in double digits. Hong Kong shot a woeful 29.6 percent overall and made under a quarter of their threes on 29 attempts.

The Philippines led by three after the first quarter and by 10 at halftime before things got out of hand in the third quarter. The Philippines outscored Japan, 29-15, in the third, allowing the team to relax in the final quarter.

J.R. Sakuragi had 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead Japan. Kosuke Takeuchi had 17 points and nine rebounds.

Iran dominated from the tip, taking a 13-point lead after one quarter and extending that lead to 29 by halftime. From then on, it was smooth sailing the rest of the way. Iran shot 56.5 percent overall and 53.8 percent from deep.

Vishesh Bhriguvanshi had 15 points to lead India, but he shot just 3-of-17. As a team, India made just 30.2 percent of its field goals.

China raced out to a 12-point lead after one quarter, but Kazakhstan settled things down as the game wore on. China’s lead remained 12 at halftime, but Kazakhstan cut that to four heading into the final quarter. Kazakstan actually tied the game in the fourth, but it was never able to get over the hump.

Jerry Johnson had 13 points and six assists to lead Kazakhstan. Mikhail Yevstigneyev added 11 points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Korea 96, Bahrain 51: Guard Tae-Sool Kim led Korea with 17 points and seven assists as one of four players off the Korean bench who scored in double figures in a 96-51 rout of Bahrain.

Bahrain led for most of the first quarter as Korea struggled out of the gates, but a 12-2 run in the final three minutes of the quarter made that advantage a fleeting one. The Koreans pummeled their opponents in the second quarter, allowing just a free throw in the first six minutes of the period. Bahrain’s 11-6 lead at the 3:07 mark in the first quarter was followed by a 28-3 run by Korea that built a 20-point lead before the half.

Bahrain was led by Ahmed Ishmaeel, who was the only player on his team to score in double figures with 19.
