Mavericks to bring in Fab Melo to training camp, per report

Will the Mavericks give Fab Melo a chance to prove himself during training camp?

Nick Laham

The Dallas Mavericks are expected to invite recently-waived big man Fab Melo to training camp, according to Marc Stein of ESPN. Melo was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies by the Boston Celtics and was then released by the organization.

Melo, the 22nd pick in the first-round of the 2012 NBA Draft out of Syracuse, played 36 minutes total over six games for the Celtics during his rookie season. He averaged 1.2 points and 0.5 rebounds per game.

The 7-footer spent much of the 2012-2013 NBA season playing for the Celtics’ D-league affiliate, the Maine Red Claws. He played in 33 games in the D-league, averaging 9.8 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Melo also played for the Celtics’ Las Vegas Summer League team, putting up 6.2 points and 3.4 rebounds prior to being traded to Memphis.

The Celtics moved on, the Grizzlies didn’t wait to give him a chance and now the Mavericks could be the next team in line to consider the prospect of adding the 23-year-old center. Should he make the roster, he’ll cash in on having “2 checks!”, as he tweeted after the Grizzlies cut him.
