2013 FIBA Americas schedule: Mexico faces Puerto Rico in title game

Gustavo Ayon and Mexico will look to complete their stunning run in the tournament.

USA TODAY Sports

The final day of the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship is upon us, and Mexico will face Puerto Rico for the title. Prior to the championship game, Argentina will take on the Dominican Republic to determine third place.

Both Mexico and Puerto Rico reached the title game on the backs of their NBA (and former NBA) talent. Gustavo Ayon continued his excellent tournament run, scoring 24 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in Mexico's 76-70 win over Argentina. Ayon outplayed Luis Scola, who had 18 points and eight rebounds.

Puerto Rico got great play from their guards in a 79-67 win over the Dominican Republic with both J.J. Barea and Carlos Arroyo putting forth strong efforts. Arroyo led all scorers with 20 points, while Barea added 16 points and eight assists.

Mexico and Puerto Rico just played each other in Sunday's second round, where Mexico came up with a 66-59 victory. However, Barea, Arroyo and Renaldo Balkman all sat out that game because Puerto Rico had already safely reached the semifinals.

All four teams have qualified for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, so there's not much riding on these games other than pride and bragging rights. A Mexico championship would be quite stunning, however, considering they only qualified for this tournament because Panama was banned.

Both games can be watched online at ESPN3. Here’s the schedule for the day (all times Eastern):

Argentina vs. Dominican Republic, 5:30 p.m.

Mexico vs. Puerto Rico, 8 p.m.
