NBA free agency: Angolan star Carlos Morais to join Raptors camp

Morais is hoping to become the first Angolan ever to play in the NBA.

USA TODAY Sports

Toronto Raptors president Masai Ujiri confirmed Sunday that Angolan star Carlos Morais will join Raptors camp on a non-guaranteed contract, according to Ryan Wolstat of the Toronto Sun.

Along with Morais, the Raptors have also invited Julyan Stone and Chris Wright (not the point guard) to camp. The three players will compete for the 15th and final roster spot, which opened up following the release of Quentin Richardson. If Morais makes the team, he will be the first Angolan ever in the NBA.

Despite never having an NBA player, Angola has a rich basketball history in Africa. Morais recently led Angola to their 11th Afrobasket championship in the last 13 tournaments, averaging 15.9 points and 4.6 assists en route to earning tournament MVP honors.

Morais has also impressed in Olympic competition, averaging 14.8 points in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The 6’3 wing scored a game-high 24 points in a loss to the United States.

Ujiri has plenty of ties to Africa, by the way, as he’s a native of Nigeria and has been the director of the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders Africa program.
