Chris ‘Birdman’ Andersen victim in online hoax, according to his lawyer

Chris “Birdman” Andersen was reportedly the victim of an intricate catfishing scheme while he was with the Denver Nuggets last year.

Chris Andersen, known colloquially as "Birdman," was reportedly the victim of a complex internet hoax perpetrated by a woman in a small town in Canada last year, according to the Denver Post. Andersen's attorney Mark Bryant said that the woman posed as Andersen online to other people and attempted to start relationships and coax gifts. She also reportedly posed as different people to Andersen.

Bryant could not reveal the name of the woman, but the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Manitoba confirmed to the Post that they cooperated on an investigation with the Douglas Country Sheriff’s Department in Colorado that brought a 29-year-old Canadian woman, Shelly Lynn Chartier, to charges. Chartier was charged with possession and transmitting child pornography, impersonation, extortion and making threats.

The charges seem to explain why the Douglas County Sheriff's Department searched Andersen's home last year while he was still a member of the Denver Nuggets. Andersen's home was searched by the department's Internet Crimes Against Children unit. He was not charged with any crimes.

Prior to having his house searched, Andersen was reportedly threatened by a California woman with whom he used to have a relationship. The woman’s family appeared to be retaliating for Andersen’s dwindling interest in the woman by demanding that he pay for items on Amazon and bedding. According to Bryant, the woman in California is also a victim of the woman in Canada.
