Fab Melo clears waivers, according to report

The 2012 first-round pick is now an unrestricted free agent.

USA TODAY Sports

Former first-round pick Fab Melo cleared waivers on Sunday and is now an unrestricted free agent, according to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski.

Melo and his $1.3 million salary were released by the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday, just two weeks after the Grizzlies acquired the 7-footer from the Boston Celtics in exchange for Donte Greene and cash considerations.

Boston drafted Melo with the 22nd pick in the 2012 draft, but he has not been able to find his footing in the NBA and has been plagued by maturity issues. Melo played sparingly for the Celtics last season, appearing in just six games and averaging 1.2 points and 0.5 rebounds in 6.0 minutes per game. The 23-year-old out of Syracuse has shown some potential in the D-League, recording a league-record 14 blocks in a game, but that hasn’t translated to NBA success.

While Melo has been a disappointment, there may be a team in need of a big man at the end of their roster willing to give him another chance. The Chicago Bulls could use another center to go along with Joakim Noah and Nazr Mohammed, while the Miami Heat could consider bringing in Melo to compete for a roster spot.
