NBA discussing nickname jerseys, according to reports

Nicknames on the back of jerseys? The NBA may introduce nickname jerseys this season.

Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE

The NBA has discussed introducing alternate jerseys with players' nicknames on the back instead of their last names, and could debut them during one of the four meetings between the Miami Heat and Brooklyn Nets this season, according to multiple reports.

Players from both teams were asked to submit nicknames to be used on the jerseys. The Nets have a handful of established NBA nickname veterans like "The Big Ticket" or "KG" Kevin Garnett, Paul "The Truth" Pierce and "The Jet" Jason Terry.

The Heat have "King James" LeBron James, "Birdman" Chris Andersen, Dwyane Wade -- who could go by "Three" as he suggested after the Heat's title-clinching Game 7 victory over the San Antonio Spurs or his longer-tenured "Flash" nickname, and "Jesus Shuttlesworth" Ray Allen.

Player nicknames will be held subject to copyright laws. Shane Battier intended to use the nickname "Batman" but was denied and instead submitted "Shaneo" to the league.

The league has not made a final ruling on the idea, though both teams have been aware of the possibility of nickname jerseys for several weeks.
