Steve Mills replaces Glen Grunwald as Knicks’ president and GM

Grunwald, the former Knicks’ general manager will stay with the organization as an advisor.

Former Madison Square Garden president Steve Mills will take Glen Grunwald's position as general manager of the New York Knicks, according to ESPN's Marc Stein. The Knicks confirmed the news in a press release, also stating that Mills will be team president. Grunwald will remain with the organization as an advisor.

Grunwald joined the Knicks in 2006 as assistant general manager under Isiah Thomas before being named interim general manager in 2011. The interim tag was removed in April 2012, making Grunwald executive vice president of basketball operations in the process.

Mills has a lot of experience in the NBA, working his way up through several positions during his 16 years in the league office. Mills eventually ended up as COO and president of Madison Square Garden before leaving for a role with Magic Johnson Enterprises in 2009. Mills had reportedly been one of the favorites to take Billy Hunter’s place as the executive director of the National Basketball Players Association.

Mills was the man who initially hired Isiah Thomas as the Knicks’ general manager during his previous tenure with the team.
