Chase Budinger injury: Timberwolves forward has cartilage problem in knee

The Minnesota Timberwolves forward will be examined further for a cartilage injury in his knee.

Jesse Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

The Minnesota Timberwolves announced Friday that Chase Budinger has suffered a cartilage injury to his left knee, but there was no timetable given for how long Budinger will be out nor the severity of the issue. The swingman will seek further examination with the well-regarded Dr. James Andrews in Alabama early next week.

The injury is to the same knee that limited the small forward to 23 games in 2012-13. Budinger tore his meniscus in his knee last season after averaging 9.4 points and 3.1 rebounds per game off the bench. A favorite of Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman, Budinger was re-signed as a free agent this summer on a three-year, $16 million contract.

Budinger is still just 25 years old and was viewed as a key reserve for a Minnesota team that was hit hard by injuries last year. He spent the first three years of his career in Houston, where he became a valuable part of Adelman’s offense by moving well off screens and developing into a dangerous midrange shooter.

Budinger has career averages of 9.4 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.

Minnesota has bodies behind Budinger if he's not ready to go by opening day. Among them are free agent signing Corey Brewer and rookie Shabazz Muhammad.
