Erik Spoelstra, Heat near contract extension agreement, according to report

Spoelstra, who has won two straight titles with the Heat, would have become a free agent in 2014 without an extension.

Erik Spoelstra and the Miami Heat are nearing an agreement on a contract extension, reports Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski. Spoelstra's current contract is set to expire at the close of the 2013-14 season. The length of the extension has not been reported, but Wojnarowski says that the Heat intend to announce it before the team begins training camp in the Bahamas this week.

Wojnarowski also reports that multiple teams were prepared to chase Spoelstra hard in the 2014 offseason if Miami allowed his contract to expire. At age 42, Spo is both one of the youngest and most successful coaches in the league. He has a career .660 regular season winning percentage, behind only Gregg Popovich and Tom Thibodeau among active coaches. His .636 career postseason winning percentage is No. 4 all-time, behind Phil Jackson, Paul Westhead and Butch Van Breda Koff.

The Heat announced bench and front office changes on Saturday, as Juwan Howard became an assistant coach and Keith Askins moved from Spoelstra's staff to the top position in scouting.
