Knicks pick up Mike Woodson’s option for 2014-15

The head coach has had a lot of regular season success in New York, but the last two postseasons have been a disappointment.

Recently hired New York Knicks president Steve Mills announced Monday that the option on Mike Woodson's contract for 2014-15 has been picked up.

Woodson has enjoyed a good amount of success since joining the Knicks in 2011 after his tenure with the Atlanta Hawks. Woodson became an assistant under Mike D'Antoni in August 2011, and he took over as head coach when D'Antoni resigned in March 2012. Woodson went 18-6 as interim coach to close out 2011-12, but the Knicks fell to the Miami Heat in five games in the first round of the postseason.

Last year, Woodson helped engineer the Knicks to a 54-28 record, good for second in the Eastern Conference. Woodson had a lot of success with some unconventional lineups, including a two point-guard look featuring Raymond Felton and Pablo Prigioni. However, Woodson did take some criticism for his stubbornness in the postseason as the Knicks were knocked out in six games by the Indiana Pacers in the second round.

With his option picked up, Woodson should feel more comfortable about his status heading into the year. But there are still no guarantees, and if the Knicks disappoint again in the postseason, Woodson could easily still find himself on the chopping block.
